Occupational Summary
Under the leadership of the Aging Center Data Science & Statistics (DSS) Lab in the Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development (Duke Aging Center), perform intermediate- and advanced-level statistical analysis and programming for a broad range of interdisciplinary research projects. Support grants, Program Projects, Clinical Trials, Pilots, and junior and senior clinical faculty as a member of DSS. Collaborate closely and effectively with a cross-functional project team, including clinical investigators, quantitative scientists, and trainees, with regard to statistical aspects of each project. Participate in collaborative efforts to provide statistical support for the projects coming through the DSS.

Responsibilities
COMMUNICATION, LEADERSHIP, AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT (20%)
•Communicate with increasing independence, both verbally and in writing, to internal and external collaborators, colleagues, and functional group leadership
•Give oral presentations of results/status at investigator/project/other meetings with minimal to no guidance
•Recognize potential statistical and operational risks and communicate them promptly to relevant personnel and leadership, providing proposed solutions
•Engage with the scientific questions being addressed in collaborations and clearly communicate statistical concepts in the context of the research
•"Translate" ideas from clinical collaborators into statistical considerations
•Recognize system-wide problems and participate constructively in seeking resolutions
•Participate successfully in all statistical aspects of a project, with an understanding of all tasks/roles of a biostatistician in a project

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS PLANNING, SPECIFICATIONS, AND ANALYSIS (20%)
•Write statistical analysis plans and analysis data set specifications following the standard guideline and template, with minimal guidance
•Seek guidance for analyses when appropriate, but generally only consult faculty or statistical expert on an as-needed basis
•Lead or participate actively in the statistical team responsible for designing and validating analysis data sets, programs, and output products
•Write methods and analysis sections of reports/manuscripts, with minimal assistance from statistical advisor or reviewing statistician

STATISTICAL AND CLINICAL KNOWLEDGE (20%)
•Demonstrate expertise in one or more statistical methodology areas or clinical/domain areas
•Understand alternative methodology and explain comparative advantages of statistical methods commonly used within statistical projects (ex: linear, categorical, and survival data analysis)
•Understand statistical assumptions and identify whether they are met in a given scientific context (conceptually or statistically)
•With minimal guidance, identify gaps in statistical and clinical knowledge and consult biostatisticians and/or clinical collaborators with appropriate expertise as necessary
•With minimal guidance, teach appropriate statistical methodology to investigators, quantitative methodologists, and less experienced biostatisticians
•Lead collaboration discussions with statistical rationale; identify any threat to research or statistical integrity and brings to statistical expert and/or faculty
•Expand understanding of clinical aspects, coding and terminology as applicable to projects, through self-education and taking the initiative to learn from clinical collaborators
•Review clinical papers relevant to ongoing projects/collaborations with minimal to no guidance from statistical advisor

DATA MANAGEMENT AND PROGRAMMING (40%)
•Possess a clear understanding of the data collection systems or data generation mechanisms, data structures, and data files merging principals
•Work effectively with data managers to ensure statistical needs of the project are met
•Demonstrate advanced SAS or R programming knowledge
•Document programs clearly so that other statisticians/programmers will be able to follow them.
•Understand and troubleshoot analysis programs written by others
•Check and/or verify results (QC) based on provided specifications without guidance
•Learn new programming languages and tools as needed with minimal guidance
•With minimal guidance, develop and review simulation studies, codes novel methods, and uses advanced statistical programming packages as needed

Education
Position requires a minimum of a Doctoral degree in (bio) statistics or related field and no relevant experience, or a Master's degree in (bio) statistics or related field and 2 years relevant experience, or a Bachelor's degree in (bio) statistics or related field and 4 years relevant experience.

Experience
Contribution to analysis of clinical trials and/or clinical research projects, and/or participation in preparation of academic manuscripts or other written summaries of analysis results, thorough experience with SAS and R, and solid command of the English language is required.
