Description GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY: This is skilled work of a specialized nature in the inspection, cleaning, maintenance and repair of sanitary sewer lines. Work involves operation of mechanical equipment used to clean sewer lines, operation of a closed circuit television system used to inspect sewer lines and to detect breaks, cracks, and leaking joints, and operation of specialized grouting equipment to seal breaks, cracks and leak in sewer lines.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: - Cleans sewer lines with high velocity water pressure cleaning equipment.
- Conducts inspections of sewer lines for breaks, cracks, leaking joints, cleanliness, proper grade and service connection locations; sets up closed circuit TV lines, operates power driven reels, electronic control panels, television cameras, monitors, video tape recorders and related electronic equipment; evaluates the condition of sewer lines and records the location of breaks, cracks and leaking joints on maps.
- Sets up and operates sewer grouting equipment; mixes chemical grout components; positions grouting equipment and applies grout to seal breaks, cracks and leaks; operates air testing equipment to check the sealing process.
- Performs sewer investigations including dye tests, smoke tests, and complaint investigations.
- Performs activities associated with flow meters including installation, removal, data retrieval, data review and report preparation.
- Performs preventive maintenance and makes minor repairs to equipment including tv unit, combination sewer cleaning truck, flow meters, and other equipment.
- Perform other duties as assigned or directed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: - Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in the cleaning, inspection, maintenance and repair of sanitary sewers.
- Knowledge of the operation of a closed circuit television system and its application to the inspection, maintenance and repair of sanitary sewers.
- Knowledge of sewer grouting equipment, methods and techniques.
- Verbal skills to communicate with supervisors, crew members, and consumers regarding technical or service information.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all supervisors, crew members, employees of other departments, property owners and the general public.
- Ability to operate a variety of construction equipment safely and productively in traffic.
- Ability to perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled construction and maintenance tasks.
- Ability to operate specialized electronic and mechanical equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret basic blueprints, diagrams, and maps and locate sewer lines.
- Ability to maintain files and records, and to prepare simple reports.
- Ability to be available to work nights, weekends, stand-by and emergency call-ins.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: - High school diploma from a school accredited by a regional accrediting agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or GED certificate issued by the appropriate state agency.
- A combination of equivalent education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
- Must possess a valid Mississippi Driver's License and acceptable MVR with Class A endorsement.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This position primarily performed outdoors and is exposed to all types of weather conditions including temperature extremes and rainy environments. Outdoor setting involves all types of property and site conditions, including open spaces, timberlands, urban developments, flat and hilly terrain, building construction sites and road rights of way. Subject to outside weather/driving conditions. Work exposes employee daily to biological and toxic chemical hazards found in sewage and chemical grout. Work also exposes employee to potential mechanical, electrical, physical and sewer gas hazards when setting up and operating television inspection and grouting equipment.
Work requires regular and at times sustained performance of heavier physical tasks such as walking over rough surfaces, bending, stooping, crouching, crawling, kneeling, working in restricted and confined spaces, climbing and frequently lifting of light and heavy objects up to 75lbs. Work also requires physical dexterity in the frequent use of hand-eye coordination and manipulative skills using fingers, limbs or body for the operation of vehicles, electronic and mechanical equipment.
