OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY

Plan, coordinate, or participate in programs to enable Master of International Development Policy (MIDP) students to explore internship opportunities through practical work experience; serve as expert in MIDP field to include writing/publishing, making presentations to national groups, and serving as resource in area of expertise. Lead departmental Global Careers strategy. Administer global and special programs and manage global resources

WORK PERFORMED

  • Provide individual career advising/coaching and resources for MIDP students, MPP international students, and MPP students interested in international development and foreign policy (40%)
    • Advise/coach students on career exploration, internship and job, networking, negotiations, career change, and other components of their career and professional development.
    • Provide resume, cover letter, other documents, and LinkedIn profile review.
    • Advise/coach students on networking, in collaboration with the Career Services team, MIDP staff and faculty, and Sanford Alumni team.
    • Design MIDP and MPP sector and industry handouts, in collaboration with the Career Services team.
    • Approve internships and manage the student's documentation of successful completion of internships for students in MIDP and MPP programs.


  • Design and deliver career and professional development programming to MIDP and MPP students (30%)
    • Design and deliver curriculum for PubPol 800 Career and Professional Development graduate course.
    • Supervise Teaching Assistant(s) (TA's) assigned to the course.
    • Design and deliver comprehensive career and professional development programming for MIDP and MPP students, in collaboration with the Career Services and MIDP and MPP teams.
    • Research and present public policy career-related resources, including job sites, email lists, and professional programs.
    • Consult with students regularly to determine specific programming needs.


  • Administer global and special programs and manage global resources (15%)
    • Collaborate with MIDP and MPP program leadership and Duke Visa Services to ensure that students who have employer and/or sponsor restrictions regarding work and students who are part of special programs are identified and served.
    • Manage academic-year community service internships for the Coverdell Peace Corps Fellows Program.


  • Build and maintain professional global public policy network (10%)
    • Partner with Director of Employer Relations and MIDP team to build connections and networks with relevant international development organizations and potential new employers, using Sanford alumni connections and MIDP staff and faculty connections.
    • Build Sanford networks, with international development organizations that employ substantial numbers of Sanford and Duke alumni, in collaboration with Sanford Alumni Relations and MIDP teams.
    • Attend conferences and networking events that increase the visibility of MIDP and its students to potential employers.
    • Maintain membership/relationships with appropriate professional organizations (e.g. DevEx, Society for International Development, APSIA, NASPAA, NCCDA, etc.) and collaborate on events when appropriate.

DEPARTMENTAL PREFERENCES

In addition, the successful candidate will possess the following qualities/attributes:

  • A minimum of 1 year of experience in working in or partnering with international development sector.
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience of working with international students.
  • Knowledge of international public policy issues and programs, including knowledge of international development sector.
  • Excellent counseling, communication (oral and written), and presentation (face-to-face and virtual) skills.
  • Strong organizational program and program development skills.
  • Creative thinking/reasoning abilities.
  • Demonstrated competency to oversee multiple tasks with attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively with a broad range of internal and external constituents including students, employers, alumni, faculty, and staff.
  • Proficiency in working with technology-based services.
  • Proven ability to work independently while functioning as a team member.
  • Strong ability with time management, event organization, and managing multiple projects and details.
  • Cross-cultural communications skills and sensitivity.
  • Customer service orientation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Work generally requires communications, analytical and organizational skills acquired through completion of a master's degree.

Experience

Work requires 1 year of career advising/counseling/coaching or other student services function to gain considerable knowledge of career advising/counseling/coaching.
